Live well on dialysis through consistent treatments, kidney-friendly meals, activity, sleep, and emotional care. CuraKidney provides mental health checks, nutrition counseling, a comfortable setting, and transport assistance to support attendance.

Dialysis is lifesaving, but it’s only one part of feeling your best. A healthy routine—built around treatment, nutrition, movement, rest, and support—can boost energy, protect your heart, and help you stay active and independent.

Follow every session. Dialysis works cumulatively. Shortening or skipping treatments lets waste and fluid build up, raising blood pressure and straining your heart. Complete each session, arrive on time, and review your labs with your care team so adjustments can be made early.

Prioritize a kidney-friendly plate. Sodium drives fluid retention; keep it low by cooking fresh and skipping highly processed foods. Your team may ask you to moderate potassium and phosphorus (think portions of bananas, tomatoes, dairy, nuts, and colas). Get the right amount of high-quality protein—eggs, fish, poultry, or tofu—based on your dietitian’s guidance.

Manage fluids wisely. Your daily allowance is personal. Track sips, choose smaller cups, suck on ice chips or lemon wedges, and reduce salty foods to curb thirst. Watch for swelling, sudden weight gain between sessions, or shortness of breath, and report changes promptly.

Move most days. Gentle activity improves stamina, mood, and sleep. Try 10–15 minute walks, light stretches, or chair exercises. If you’re new to exercise, start low and slow, and confirm what’s safe with your provider.

Protect your access. Wash before treatments, keep the area clean and uncovered at night, and check daily for a steady “thrill.” Avoid blood pressure cuffs or tight clothing on your access arm, and notify staff about redness, warmth, or pain.

Take medications as prescribed. Blood pressure drugs, diabetes medicines, phosphate binders, vitamin D, and anemia treatments all work with dialysis to keep you well. Set reminders, use a pill organizer, and bring your list to appointments.

Sleep and emotional health matter. Build a wind-down routine, limit late caffeine, and create a comfortable sleep environment. It’s normal to feel anxious or low at times—talk to your team, consider counseling, and lean on peer support to feel less alone.

Plan for real life. Meal-prep on non-dialysis days, schedule errands when your energy is highest, and keep a small “treatment bag” with a blanket, dietitian-approved snacks, entertainment, and your fluid plan. Traveling? Ask your center about coordinating treatments at your destination.

Small, consistent choices lead to steadier energy, better labs, and more control over your days. Celebrate weekly wins to stay motivated—and speak up if something feels off so your plan can be tailored to you.

At CuraKidney, we support your whole wellbeing with routine mental health checks, personalized nutrition counseling, a comfortable treatment environment, and transport assistance to help you get to every session. We’re with you—every step of the way.
